Ultimate Guide To Dermal Fillers: What You Need To Know | Helen Hunt Aesthetics
written by Helen Hunt

Dermal fillers can help combat the signs of ageing by filling out areas of the face which may suffer from volume loss — the leading cause of wrinkles and fine lines. This treatment for fine lines can help provide smoother skin, fuller lips and help restore your skin to give you that youthful glow. Read on to learn more about whether dermal fillers could be right for you.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers consist of a gel-like substance that is injected under the skin to restore lost volume and reduce the appearance of lines and sagging. Dermal fillers can be a great way to get a younger look without invasive surgery or the need for long recovery times. This makes them a great option if you want to try out procedures which combat the signs of ageing without undergoing a costly surgical procedure.

How can dermal fillers enhance my appearance?

Dermal fillers can help to add volume back to your face. One of the first signs of ageing is a loss of volume in your face, leaving you with wrinkles or sagging skin. Some of the benefits of dermal fillers include the ability to combat a range of the signs of ageing, including:

  • Smooth out fine lines and wrinkles in the skin – particularly around the nose and mouth
  • Restore volume to areas such as the cheeks
  • Plump and restore your lips – reducing fine vertical lines
  • Smooth out chin creases
  • Improve the symmetry of your face and features

What are fillers made of?

Dermal fillers can be made from a range of ingredients. However, the most effective are closely related to Hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that naturally occurs in the body. HA is a common feature of many skincare treatments. When choosing a skincare practitioner, it’s important to ensure they use dermal fillers that fall in line with FDA regulations. Want to learn more? Take a look at our FAQs for more information.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Qualified practitioners will often use numbing cream on the areas which are being treated with dermal fillers. This should mean there is no pain associated with having dermal fillers. However, you may feel some discomfort or itching when the filler is injected.

When will I see results?

Dermal fillers have pretty immediate results. Bear in mind that the area may be swollen for a couple of hours or days after the procedure. However, once the swelling goes down, your results will be visible. Some individuals require a few appointments to attain their desired look, whereas others are happy with their results immediately!

How long will the results last?

As with most cosmetic procedures, the longevity of results varies from person to person. Typically, the effects of dermal fillers will last between 6 to 18 months, meaning it is a relatively long-term option for cosmetic surgery. Equally, if you do not enjoy the experience, the effects will wear off.

Will I need any aftercare?

Dermal fillers can have different effects depending on the person. Some people may experience bruising or swelling after the procedure, but this is completely normal. You should avoid touching or massaging the area that you had dermal fillers used on for at least 12 hours and should not use topical creams on the area. Generally, there is little aftercare needed once the initial swelling or discomfort has subsided.
