Our Focus for August: Healthy Eating

With the summer well and truly in full swing and temperatures soaring, it is not the best time to go ahead with some treatments (as we discussed in our focus last month). Instead, here at Helen Hunt aesthetics we have been thinking about other ways that we can keep our skin looking amazing. One of the things we came up with was healthy eating – there’s a few key foods and supplements that can really help your immune system and skin thrive.

1. Vitamin C: This vitamin is best in a water-soluble form which isn’t produced by the body. A lack of this vitamin can lead to scurvy, atopic dermatitis and porphyria. We can find the water-soluble version in foods such as citrus fruits, bell peppers, gogi berries and Alma berries. If none of these foods take your fancy you can also buy vitamin C supplements. A regular dose of vitamin C is important for maintaining skin health and protects against UV damage.

2. Vitamin E: This is an antioxidant which avoids damage to the body by free radicals which destroy cells, tissues, and organs. Natural food sources include vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens. This vitamin can reduce UV damage to the skin and reduce the symptoms of atopic dermatitis.

3. Zinc: This plays a key role in cell division, cell growth, wound healing and the breakdown of carbohydrates. Zinc also has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the effects of skin conditions such as acne, and eczema. You’ll find it in pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, almonds, spinach, and even cheddar cheese!

4. Magnesium: this often goes hand in hand with zinc. Magnesium plays a role in hydration and skin repair, so it has been known to give you that healthy glow that everyone wants. You can find it in leafy greens, avocados, bananas, legumes, and seafood.

5. Alkaline foods: best known for the anti-aging alkaline diet loved by celebs such as Victoria Beckham this food group is also beneficial to your skin! Alkaline foods help to stabilise our bodies’ pH levels which increases collagen production, reduces inflammation, and nourishes dry skin. Eating some foods will help you to shift the pH of your stomach more towards alkaline. These foods include, leafy greens and superfoods, seeds and nuts, raw ripe fruits and vegetables and lentils. You can also avoid foods that promote acidity such as, meat, dairy, fish, eggs, and oils.
